Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider – 1000 Miglia Perfection?

AVAILABLE NOW

Is there a better choice of companion for the Mille Miglia than the Aurelia B24 Spider?

That depends on your motivation – if you want to finish towards the top of the leader board the formula says you have to be in a pre-war car, probably an Alfa 6C, but you will complete the week in a frazzled state.

So you want to have a more relaxed journey – you could take a 300 SL, but be baked like a ciabatta at the end of it. A Jaguar perhaps? Everyone knows an Italian car will get a better reception. So, a Ferrari then – great race cars but look out if you want to keep the fillings in your teeth. The B24 seems to have it all; stunning looks – tick, great performance – tick, exceptional comfort and handling – tick. Plus the locals will love it.

Every aspect of the Aurelia Spider delights. Visually of course, is there a better expression of the 50’s ‘Barchetta’ motif? But also at a tactile level. It starts when reaching inside the door for the plaited leather strap that releases the latch. Step over the tall cill and lower yourself into a broad, welcoming seat whilst grasping the slender wooden rim of the elegant aluminium steering wheel, characteristically large in diameter to compliment the surprisingly light, high geared steering.

Cast an eye over the elegant dashboard, pleasingly bereft of the haphazard switchgear that can plague many cars of the era. Insert the key into the reassuringly solid-feeling ignition switch, turn and press. Even the simple action of pressing for ignition rather than turning gives a sense of occasion. Once running the 2 ½ litre V6 engine, the World’s first, settles down to a characteristic throbbing tickover. The long, smooth travel of the accelerator pedal is perfectly in tune with the cars relaxed, long-legged character. Likewise the light and easily regulated clutch which mates in the Spider to a floor-mounted gear change, mechanical in feel but surprisingly direct given the length of the linkage to the characteristic transaxle arrangement at the rear.

Once under way it doesn’t take long to appreciate the benefits that the transaxle layout brings. Combined with the DeDion rear end it gives the car superb roadholding, sweeping from one corner to the next without any drama and in tighter turns traction is excellent whilst the steering remains accurate and communicative throughout. Performance wise, in the lower reaches of the rev counter the B-24 is calm and sedate but it is possible to tap into the car’s more sporting side by pushing the needle into the upper half of its range. The creamy-smooth power delivery just keeps building as the exhaust note takes on a harder edge. This is where the Aurelia comes into its own – being as it was, the first example of a model described specifically as a ‘Gran Tourismo’. The exemplary chassis engineering balanced by just the right amount of power equals the ideal car for covering long distances in comfort and in ultimate style.

As the journey continues it is easy to relax into the rhythm of driving whilst the car deals with whatever the road conditions throw up – even the state of modern British roads is taken in its stride! Every gearchange is an opportunity to enjoy the lusty engine note.

Every corner is a chance to feel the chassis working to help the car progress down the road. Every village is a source of admiring glances in your direction – thank goodness the weather is fine and it was possible to leave the hardtop in the garage!
